Challenges DRISHTI
Design Development of Compass for Paratrooping and Skydiving
The challenge aims to design, develop and certify a magnetic compass specifically suited for paratrooping and skydiving applications. Each parachutist needs a compass to determine direction in case of separation from the group or during limited visibility, such as when passing through cloud layers. Compass unaffected by pressure changes or cold weather is usually recommended for the above challenge domain. The compass must show direction regardless of its mounted attitude on the parachutist.
Design requirement of Compass:
(i) It should be Magnetic and chest/belly/ wrist mounted.
(ii) It should be luminous to enable usage during night jump.
(iii) It should be able to set and indicate a predetermined direction and rotate 360 deg.
(iv) It should be water resistant and shock proof.
(v) It should be lightweight, total weight not to exceed 100 grams.
